The Living Desert Flora and Fauna Sanctuary lies just outside Broken Hill. Atop one of the hills sit 12 sandstone sculptures forming the Sculpture Symposium. One of the sculptures, “Under the Jaguar Sun, is featured here, overlooking the desert landscape.
Some 20 km from Wilpena Pound lies the Sacred Canyon. It’s a small, narrow canyon or chasm which has Aboriginal petroglyphs chipped into the rocks walls. We didn’t walk all the way up as the path was blocked by hundreds of bees making the most of the remaining moisture in the damp sand and drying-up rock pools.
Having walked up to, then over Tanderra Saddle we can now see into Wilpena Pound. I’m using a wide-angle lens here so, while it looks as if you could touch the peaks on the other side of the Pound, it’s actually another 12 km from here back to the Wilpena services area (which sits just outside the Pound).
