Charters Towers (pop. 8000), sits 20 degrees south of the equator, and is some 135 km (85 miles) south-west of the coastal town of Townsville. This is the view of the town as seen from Towers Hill. The town’s reason for existence is the discovery of what turned out to be huge quantities of gold in the 1870’s.
