Outback 2011: Dirranbandi

Dirranbandi, population ca. 400, sits between Hebel and St. George in southern Queensland. This image is of the gable end of the railway station. The railway line looks unused though, as with many rural lines closed in the past few decades, looks like it could be pressed into service if required.

Cubbie Station, the largest cotton property in the southern hemisphere, lies in this area. According to their web site, Cubbie covers around 93,000 hectares (230,000 acres). This is a grab shot of a road train loaded with cotton bales. The roadsides are littered with small pieces of cotton – this image illustrates where those balls of cotton come from, the uncovered sides of the bales.
