I recall a comment in an old newspaper article on my “Old News from Armidale and New England” blog where mention is made of the vast amounts of timber that are available to be felled (if only they had a railway line nearby upon which to transport the timber). Perhaps it was a vista such as this that got the old timers excited and thinking about the riches to be had (rather than the devastation to be brought).
