A reminder of just how far apart settlements (and supplies) are in the Outback. Travellers need to be aware of these distances and carry ample supplies, especially water in case of a vehicle breakdown.
I was slightly disturbed recently to see a brochure on a Queensland Government website promoting “The Adventure Way” being the 2400 km (1500 mile) route between Brisbane and Adelaide. The disturbing part was that the brochure makes no mention of some of the dangers of travelling in remote areas that might not be immediately obvious to city dwellers or foreign tourists. For example, travelling the more remote parts of the route in the middle of summer, or after rain is highly inadvisable.
