Bee’low the overhang

We found three native bees colonies along the Styx River

Native bees under rock overhang
This was the largest of the three. The wax combs covered the underside of the overhang of a large rock – it’s about 3 metres across. The colony is a collection of discrete wax combs each affixed to the rock and hanging free in space.

This photograph illustrates the detail of a couple of combs and was taken side-on looking across the surface of the rock.
