Cold granite

Cathedral Rock National Park has, as its main feature, a rather large number of massive weathered granite blocks. Many of the rocks take the form of balancing rocks, ie they sit, apparently precariously, upon other granite rocks. The cycle of cold winters and hot summers breaks the stone down; wearing away at the outer layers as if peeling an onion.

And yes, there are some rock formations as large as cathedrals.
