First orchid of spring

Caladenia orchid

It’s that time again. Another cycle begins. The Caladenia orchid is the first of the 7 or so orchid species that will appear on our property between now and Autumn. It’s about 2 cm (1 inch) across and about 10 cm (4 inches) tall – not easy to spot.

This Caladenia appears in several places around the 100 acres – from individual specimens up to about 10 in a group. I’ve seen more of them this year than in previous years. This may be due to climatic conditions, or just natural regeneration given that we don’t run any stock on the property (the previous owners did).
