New orchid on the block: Glossodia

Orchid: Glossodia major

I spotted this orchid yesterday while out with the dogs (those dogs seem to get plenty of walks). I thought it was another Caladenia but having photographed it and identified it from my Field Guide it now looks to be a Glossodia major (Waxlip orchid). This specimen is about 3.5 cm across (1.5 inches). This is the first I’ve seen of them on the property. I don’t think they’re especially rare, but I’ve only found two specimens (and they’re within a bit over a metre (4 ft) of each other).

Photographing small flowers outside is quite a challenge at this time of year. It’s windy season so there’s no such thing as “motionless”. Lots of patience is required to wait for a lull in the wind.
